Week 5- Start Your Engines!

VROOM, VROOM!

This week, I continued polishing the Google Site for the Library Council here at Eastern Oklahoma State College. I can't wait to share and utilize this great resource with the Council. I truly feel that it will make us more productive in a world filled with meetings and NO TIME!

The reading (What It All Means?) really helped me to think about what the libraries of the future need to be to help facilitate the new generation of life-long learners (or should I say editors, publishers, etc.). I am looking forward to having discussions with other library directors on how we can change to fit the 2050 learner!

And... what can help? Well, the Web 2.0 tools that we investigated this week seem to be an endless resource to help us organize and share information. They also seem to multiple each day!

So, start your engines, and get ready for the acceleration coming your way! Will you be a teacher of the past or a grease monkey ready for the crashes, pit stops, smooth sailing, and non-existent finish line of tomorrow's information highway?

Week 4 - Disney's Future World Ride

This week in class I felt a little bit like I was in the big "silver ball" ride at Disney's Epcot Center... I was riding with thoughts of tomorrow's classrooms and what might change in the world. While some things sat well with me and others just seemed too far out there to even start thinking about, I was in the ride accepting and assessing all of it as I rode.

Twitter has been fun and educational at the same time. I am now somewhat comfortable to post both for the social aspect and the educational sharing. I have not yet set it up where I am getting the instant Twitter messages on my Blackberry, but will I when I am a little more comforable? Who knows?

This morning I presented a basic "shell" of my Google sites in a call for Library Council members to the faculty. I explained with some detail that the committee I am forming would be meeting via ITV for the first time in September, and then we would only "meet online" afterward. I was a little apprehensive to do this, as our faculty is just really in about their 3rd full year of distance learning, BUT I did have three of them (one being the Dean of the department :0)) offer to be on the committee due to the nature/structure of it. Being a small community college, we are all on about 5-6 committees. I do think they liked the idea!

The podcasting sites are wonderful! It is so great to know that there are free resources out there for helping us with reading and writing on the web. I plan on sharing this and many of the other free sites and ideas with my staff members. Hey, maybe I should embed a podcast in the email just to show them how easy it really is!

I also looked at social bookmarking and then thought a lot about the usefulness of tags. As a librarian, the tags are like subject and keywords in a library search. Teaching students/patrons the new ways to find, organize, and share ideas feels natural and fun. I am very happy about what I am learning... and sharing!

Week 3- Which Web is Up?

Okay, which way is up? This week proved to give me many ideas of how I can use RSS to improve my professional development, Photo sharing for the home and office, and Google Sites to help organize all these wonderful things!

I set up my first RSS feed with Google Reader. I plan to check this each day, as I have imbedded it into IGoogle, which has already been the first thing I check each day. I am hoping that it will eliminate my needless checking of different sites and blogs.

As for the Flickr account, I am thinking that this will be able to help us back up our archives here at EOSC. What a great place to store and share all of the old photos and yearbooks here at Eastern!

I am looking forward to working with Google Sites. This looks like a great place to store, organize, and access information. And with its read/write capabilities, others will be able to add to and feel part of the EOSC library!

Week 3 was a good week!

Wiki Wiki

My grad class this week helped me think about Blogs to follow, wikis, and photo sharing on the web. There are several good (and several bad) blogs out there for libraries. My favorite for EOSC was http://librarystories.blogspot.com/ set up by Oklahoma Libraries.

Wikis are a great place to collaborate on documents. With feeling that life is "wiki wiki" (I'm practicing my Hawaiian too- means very quick), I am hoping to create a wiki for my staff to work on our Library Policies and Procedures that are in bad need of review. With simple deadlines for sections, my staff could probably renew and review this HUGE document within a couple of weeks (without even meeting).

The Photo Sharing sites are great. I got an idea of how a free photo sharing site might help us with our non-existent archival budget. We have been wanting to digitize for some time now, and voila, why not use a free site to get started and have back-up?? All we need is a scanner, of which we have two!

Class is great. I even signed up for a Twitter account (mmart072). I also learned that my last post would've probably been more appropriate as a Tweet! Sorry!

Okay, this post is just for fun! I found it on Joanne Burgess' blog when I was looking for a cartoon image of a librarian!

Blogs

My class (this week) has been some of a reminder of blogs, as well as a motivator. I have wanted to reinstate/create a Library Council here at Eastern OK State College. I wish to incorporate peers, faculty, students and staff. Well, getting these people together at the same time can be a great challenge. Then, class, and viola, I will use a blog! The blog can: take care of scheduling issues; be a great archive for ideas; make a place for research-based ideas to be stored and viewed; and be something I haven't even imagined yet.

I am very enthused about the possibilities of this blog for the EOSC library as well as the blog I will soon create for a new Library Council. Now, I will just have to learn more about Wikis in the class to come.... maybe that will be more appropriate!

Welcome

Hello and Welcome to the Eastern OK State College Library blog! I originally created this blog for my Masters course, but I hope to let it become a place to celebrate our great EOSC library! Please come often. Maria
